Student/Participant Selection Criteria

The Schools on Board Field Program is aimed at high school students enrolled in Grade 10-12/13; S2-S4; or secondaire 4/5 who have a keen interest in science and the environment. The following criteria will be used to select participants.

Field Program

• Grade 10-12; S2-4; or secondaire 4/5 (16-18 yrs old)
• Keen interest in science – currently registered in related science courses
• Strong academic record a ’B’ average or better
• Self motivated
• Works well in teams
• Demonstrate strong communication skills
• Experience in extracurricular activities and volunteering
• Moderate level of physical fitness*
• Healthy level of curiosity and sense of adventure!
• Capable of travelling unaccompanied
• Working knowledge & understanding of English**

*Life on a research vessel requires a certain amount of endurance. Research activities may require physical work. Successful candidates must complete a medical screening that may require a medical examination by their doctor.

**Note that the educational program on-board the icebreaker is delivered in English, therefore a working knowledge of English is required. French is a dominant language on the ship, as many of the researchers and ship crew are from Quebec. An appreciation and understanding of the French language is a benefit.

Interested students must apply to their school and complete the Student Application Form (Part I) along with a letter of intent (Part II), stating why they would like to participate in an Arctic Field program, and a student commitment and consent form (Part III).
