David Mate works with the Earth Sciences Sector of Natural Resources Canada (NRCan). His expertise is in finding effective ways to communicate and transfer climate change impacts and adaptation knowledge to planners, community decision-makers, and the public. He is leading a new NRCan project focused on integrating local knowledge and scientific research on climate change impacts in order to improve community planning capacity across Canada. This work will involve the Canadian Institute of Planners, other national stakeholders, and local communities to develop the capacity to integrate geoscience information into climate change decision-making processes. He has spent the past 3 years working on a national municipal case studies project focused on helping planners evaluate the vulnerability of Canadian municipalities to climate change impacts (sea-level rise, water resource depletion, and permafrost degradation) and determine appropriate adaptation strategies.
