(Biography) I am currently beginning a study of watershed loading of suspended solids and dissolved organic matter to Hudson Bay. My primary study region is Churchill, Nelson and Hayes Rivers in northern Manitoba. My interests include understanding the pathways and fate of the suspended and dissolved load in the estuary and in the bay both in open water and under ice-cover, and their effect on light in the water column in the open water season. I have recently completed my Ph.D. in Physical Geography at the University of Manitoba ("Circulation of Terrestrial Runoff and its Suspended Load in a Large Tropical Lake" April, 2006 -- an investigation of dilution of, and sedimentation from underflow plumes below the Linthipe River in Lake Malawi, SE Africa.) In my earlier M.A. thesis (1999) I showed that there are no significant between-satellite differences in water column transparency determined using the NOAA AVHRR series in orbit from 1985-1998 -- thus validating their use for retrospective studies of transparency or turbidity in large lakes. From 2002-2006, I developed algorithms for, and mapped historic algal blooms (using AVHRR) and chlorophyll-a concentration (using MODIS) in Lake Winnipeg (Case II waters) under contracts through the Centre for Earth Observations Science, University of Manitoba and the Can. Dept. of Fisheries and Oceans funded by grants from the Can. Space Agency.
