Michael Byers

(Biography) Dr. Michael Byers holds a Canada Research Chair (Tier 1) in Global Politics and International Law at the University of British Columbia. Prior to 2005, he was a Professor of Law at Duke University; from 1996-1999 he was a Fellow of Jesus College, Oxford. Professor Byers writes and teaches on issues of Arctic sovereignty, diplomacy, the law of the sea and Canada-United States relations. He is the author of Who Owns the Arctic? (Douglas & McIntyre, 2009); Intent for a Nation: What is Canada for? (Douglas & McIntyre, 2007); Custom, Power and the Power of Rules (Cambridge University Press, 1999), and editor of The Role of Law in International Politics (Oxford University Press, 2000) and United States Hegemony and the Foundations of International Law (Cambridge University Press, 2003). He is a regular contributor to the Ottawa Citizen, Toronto Star, and Globe and Mail.
