Paul A. Smith (Biography) I received a B.Sc. from Trent University in 2001, and an M.Sc. from the University of British Columbia in 2003. Currently, I am working towards a Ph.D. at the National Wildlife Research Centre, Carleton University. I have been interested in shorebirds since my days at Trent, where I worked with Dr. Erica Nol. Currently, my research seeks to identify the factors that influence nest success in the shorebirds of the Eastern Arctic. Since 2000, I have worked at East Bay, Nunavut, under the direction of Grant Gilchrist of the Canadian Wildlife Service. In 2003, we expanded our effort and began work at Coats Island, 100 km southwest of our East Bay camp. With no lemmings, Coats Island is unique in the Eastern Arctic, and offers an unprecedented opportunity to study a shorebird community without the impact of lemming driven cycles of predator abundance.
